How to maximise your savings during the end-of-season clearance event
End-of-season clearance is a useful opportunity to refresh your wardrobe while spending less on recognised GUESS and Marciano styles. The strongest savings come from making deliberate choices before you browse, rather than buying simply because a price has been reduced.
Australian shoppers also need to consider seasonal timing, delivery distances, return conditions and the difference between a genuine wardrobe essential and an impulse purchase. With a practical plan, a clearance event can deliver versatile pieces for work, weekends, travel and warmer or cooler weather ahead.
Set a clear budget before browsing
Begin with a spending limit that reflects your overall wardrobe needs, not the original price of the products in your cart. A $150 budget, for example, could cover one statement item, several accessories or a complete outfit built around a discounted staple. Decide how much you are comfortable spending before browsing so that multiple small reductions do not quietly become a large total.
Separate your budget into categories such as clothing, footwear, accessories and gifts. This makes it easier to identify where a discount is genuinely useful. If you already have enough denim, directing the allowance towards a lightweight shirt, handbag or occasion piece may create more value than adding another similar item.
| Shopping approach | Best for | Savings strength | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Planned essentials | Replacing worn or missing basics | High | Limited choice in sizes |
| Outfit building | Creating several coordinated looks | High | Buying pieces that only work together |
| Statement purchase | A distinctive seasonal item | Medium | Lower cost per wear |
| Accessories and gifts | Small additions or presents | Medium | Collecting unnecessary extras |
| Last-chance markdowns | Maximum percentage reduction | Potentially very high | Limited sizes, colours and returns |
Keep a running total as you shop, including delivery fees where they apply. A heavily reduced item may be less economical if it requires an extra order or cannot be worn with anything you own. The best clearance price is the one attached to a product you will use repeatedly.
Compare the markdown with the final value
A percentage reduction can look impressive, but the original ticket price should not be the only measure. Consider fabric, construction, versatility and expected wear. A jacket worn every week may provide stronger value than a dramatically reduced top that suits only one occasion.
Work out an approximate cost per wear. If a $120 sale dress is worn six times, it costs $20 per wear. If a $45 top becomes part of a regular rotation for a year, its practical value may be much higher. This simple calculation helps distinguish a genuine bargain from a low-priced item that stays in the wardrobe.
Look closely at product descriptions and images, especially when shopping online. Check measurements, fabric composition, care instructions and available colour options. When you are ready to browse current styles, the GUESS shop can help you assess the wider selection before deciding which clearance items belong on your shortlist.
Build a list around the Australian season
Australian weather varies considerably, so clearance shopping should reflect where and when you will wear each item. A shopper in Melbourne may value layering pieces that work through cool mornings and changing temperatures, while someone in Brisbane may prioritise breathable fabrics and lighter silhouettes. Sydney, Perth and Adelaide also bring different combinations of heat, coastal humidity and cooler evenings.
Think beyond the immediate season. End-of-summer reductions can be a good time to buy swimwear, resort clothing and linen for future holidays, while winter markdowns may suit coats, knitwear and boots for the next cold spell. If you are travelling between cities, select pieces that can handle temperature changes and pack efficiently.
Australian wardrobes often need to accommodate casual workplaces, outdoor gatherings and polished weekend dressing. A versatile overshirt, structured handbag, dark denim or clean sneaker can move between these settings with minor styling changes. Prioritise items that work with at least three outfits already in your wardrobe.
Use loyalty benefits and promotion terms
If you belong to the GUESS List, check the available member benefits before placing an order or visiting a store. Loyalty programmes may provide access to selected offers, communications about events or other conditions that affect the final price. Confirm whether a promotion requires a code, a minimum spend, a particular payment method or a specified shopping period.
Read the official terms for clearance offers carefully. Some discounts cannot be combined, while others may exclude new arrivals, selected accessories or gift cards. A promotion may also apply before delivery charges rather than to the final amount paid. Understanding these details prevents an unexpected total at checkout.
Keep records of promotional codes, receipts and order confirmations until you are satisfied with your purchase. If a price changes after an order, the applicable terms will determine whether an adjustment is available. Promotions can also have different rules for online purchases and physical stores, so do not assume that one channel automatically matches the other.
Shop online and in store strategically
Online shopping offers an efficient way to compare sizes, colours and prices without travelling between locations. It is particularly useful for shoppers outside major retail centres, including customers in regional New South Wales, Queensland or Western Australia. Allow extra time for delivery and check the destination, shipping fee and estimated dispatch window before payment.
In-store shopping gives you the chance to assess colour, texture and fit in Australian lighting and changing-room conditions. It may also help you spot styling possibilities that are less obvious in a product image. Visit at a quieter time if you want to compare several sizes or speak with a team member about stock.
Brand experiences and retail announcements can be useful when planning a store visit, so keep an eye on GUESS events for relevant updates. If travelling into a city such as Melbourne or Sydney for shopping, combine the trip with other errands and set a time limit. This reduces transport costs and helps prevent browsing from turning into unplanned spending.
Use both channels without duplicating purchases. You might research online, save preferred items and then visit a store to confirm fit. Alternatively, try a silhouette in person before checking whether the same style is available online. The most efficient route depends on stock, distance and your confidence with sizing.
Check fit, condition and return details
Clearance merchandise still deserves the same inspection as full-price clothing. Look for loose threads, marks, damaged fastenings, uneven stitching and signs of handling. For shoes and bags, examine soles, corners, straps and hardware. Small presentation issues may be fixable, but they should be understood before purchase.
Review the store’s change-of-mind policy before committing. In Australia, businesses generally must provide remedies when a product has a major problem or does not match its description, but they do not always have to accept a return simply because you changed your mind. Sale items may have specific conditions, so read the policy shown at checkout or on the receipt.
Fit is especially important when an item is marked as final sale or has restricted returns. Measure your body and compare those measurements with the size guide rather than relying only on your usual label. Different cuts, fabrics and intended fits can make two garments in the same nominal size feel very different.
If you are buying a gift, check whether the recipient can exchange the item and keep the receipt or digital proof of purchase. Accessories can be a safer choice when size is uncertain, although colour and personal style still matter. A thoughtful gift is more valuable than a cheaper item that cannot be used.
Choose versatile pieces and care for them well
Build outfits around colours and shapes already present in your wardrobe. Neutral denim, black, white, soft neutrals and selected seasonal shades can be easier to combine than a trend-led colour that has no place in your existing rotation. This does not mean avoiding expressive fashion; it means making sure a statement item has supporting pieces.
Consider the occasions you actually attend. An item suited to Australian summer weddings, weekend lunches, office days or travel may earn more wear than a highly specific piece. Accessories can change the mood of an outfit without requiring a complete new look, making them useful additions when your budget is limited.
Care affects the long-term return on a clearance purchase. Follow the label instructions, avoid unnecessary washing, store knitwear flat when appropriate and use suitable hangers for structured garments. Keep shoes clean and rotate them rather than wearing the same pair every day. Good care protects the value of the original discount.
For inspiration, learning how the brand’s visual identity has developed can help you recognise the difference between a passing trend and an enduring signature. The brand evolution guide offers useful context when choosing pieces that feel distinctive while remaining wearable.
Before checkout, review your basket once more. Remove items that duplicate what you own, require costly alterations or depend on a future purchase to become useful. If the remaining pieces fit your budget, coordinate with your wardrobe and meet the promotion conditions, you are much more likely to enjoy the savings after the event ends.
Make your clearance budget work harder by browsing with a list, checking the fine print and choosing pieces that suit Australian routines and weather. Explore the current GUESS and Marciano selection, compare your options carefully and complete your purchase through the channel that offers the best combination of price, fit and convenience.
