How to care for ripped denim and keep every detail intact
Ripped denim is designed to look lived-in, but its distressed details still need thoughtful care. Open knees, shredded hems and exposed white threads can expand quickly when denim is washed too often, pulled over sharp surfaces or exposed to rough handling. A few practical habits can preserve the original shape and character of your favourite pair.
The goal is not to make distressed jeans look untouched. Natural softening is part of their appeal. The aim is to control additional fraying, protect the surrounding fabric and keep the jeans comfortable enough for regular wear. This is especially useful when a pair has carefully placed abrasions that you want to remain balanced.
For fashion updates, styling stories and brand experiences, GUESS Journal offers a place to explore the wider world of denim and contemporary dressing. The advice below focuses on everyday garment care, with techniques suited to Australian homes, wardrobes and weather.
Start with the care label and fabric structure
Before washing ripped jeans, check the sewn-in care label. Cotton denim, stretch denim and blends containing elastane respond differently to heat, agitation and drying. A pair with two per cent elastane may feel comfortable and flexible, but high temperatures can weaken the stretch fibres and affect the fit around the knees and waist.
Look closely at the distressed areas as well. A neat horizontal opening with intact vertical threads is usually more stable than a hole with loose threads around every edge. If the fabric surrounding a rip feels thin, translucent or soft enough to tear between your fingers, treat it as a vulnerable area rather than an ordinary part of the garment.
Turn the jeans inside out before washing and fasten the zip and button. This reduces rubbing against other garments and helps protect the outer surface from the metal parts of zips, hooks and bra clasps. Wash ripped denim with similarly weighted clothing, such as cotton T-shirts or other jeans, instead of towels, fleece or garments with abrasive trims.
If the care label recommends a cold wash, follow it rather than relying on a general denim rule. Garment labels are important information for Australian consumers, and under the Australian Consumer Law, products must be accurately described and fit for their intended purpose. Keep the label intact when possible, especially if the jeans are new or have a manufacturing issue.
Wash less often and with controlled movement
Frequent laundering is one of the fastest ways to enlarge distressed openings. Unless the jeans are visibly soiled, stained or exposed to strong odours, air them after wearing and allow the fabric to rest. Rotating them with other trousers can reduce stress on the same knees, seat and waistband.
When washing is necessary, select a cold or cool gentle cycle with a modest spin speed. Excessive agitation makes loose threads knot around one another and encourages the edges of rips to unravel. Place the jeans in a mesh laundry bag if the holes are already widening, leaving enough room for the garment to move without becoming tightly compressed.
Use a small amount of mild liquid detergent. Powder can be less suitable when it does not dissolve fully in a cool wash, while strong stain removers, bleach and whitening products can weaken cotton fibres and change the colour unevenly. Avoid fabric softener if the jeans contain elastane, as repeated coating can affect the fabric’s feel and performance.
Do not overload the machine. A crowded drum creates pressure and friction, particularly around the knees and hems. In a Melbourne winter, when indoor drying is common, it can be tempting to wash several heavy items together to save time. A smaller load may take longer to complete, but it gives distressed denim a gentler wash and better airflow afterwards.
Prepare the rips before they become larger
Inspect the jeans in good light before each wash. If a thread is hanging from the edge, do not pull it. Snip it carefully with small, sharp scissors, leaving the surrounding weave untouched. Pulling can draw a longer thread from the fabric and turn a small unfinished edge into a visibly larger opening.
For a tear that is beginning to extend beyond the original design, add support to the inside of the garment. A lightweight denim patch, iron-on reinforcing material or a small piece of cotton can stabilise the area. Choose a backing close to the denim’s weight, and test any adhesive or heat method on an inconspicuous section first.
Heat-sensitive stretch denim needs particular care. If an iron-on patch is used, place a pressing cloth between the iron and the garment, follow the patch manufacturer’s temperature instructions and avoid pressing directly over elastane for too long. A few small hand stitches around the perimeter can provide extra security when the material allows it.
For a polished repair, a tailor or alterations specialist can reinforce the underside while preserving the visible distressed finish. This is useful for jeans worn frequently in Sydney, where commuting, cycling and long walks can place repeated strain on the inner thigh and knee. The repair does not need to erase the rip; it can simply stop the surrounding weave from travelling further.
Dry denim slowly and protect its shape
After washing, support the jeans by the waistband or lay them flat to remove excess water. Avoid twisting or wringing the legs, since this puts uneven force through the weakened sections. Gently reshape the waistband, pockets and cuffs while the denim is damp.
Line drying is usually kinder than a tumble dryer. Hang the jeans in shade or in a well-ventilated indoor space, using a hanger with a broad bar or folding them over a line rather than clipping directly onto a distressed hem. Strong Australian sunlight can fade indigo quickly, and ultraviolet exposure may gradually weaken fibres if the garment is left outside for long periods.
In Brisbane or other warm, humid areas, make sure the jeans dry completely before folding them away. Dampness trapped in a wardrobe can produce a stale smell and encourage mildew, particularly during wet weather. Give the garment space around it while drying, and avoid placing it directly against a wall if air circulation is limited.
Keep the dryer as a last resort unless the care label specifically permits it. High heat can shrink cotton, reduce the length of the legs and stress the threads around each opening. It can also make stretch denim lose its recovery, leaving the jeans looser in some areas and tighter in others.
Wear and store ripped jeans with intention
Small changes in daily habits can prevent accidental damage. Be mindful of rough benches, exposed screws, wicker furniture and bag hardware that can catch a ripped knee or shredded hem. When entering a car, tuck the distressed section away from seat rails and buckles, which can snag loose threads during repeated movement.
Avoid overfilling the pockets. Phones, keys and heavy cardholders can pull on the pocket opening and distort the adjacent hip area. A keyring is particularly likely to catch on exposed threads. If you carry essentials in a tote or crossbody bag, check that the bag’s zip or strap is not repeatedly rubbing against the same part of the jeans.
Alternate pairs rather than wearing one favourite style every day. This allows the fibres to recover between wears and reduces repeated flexing in the same location. It also helps you notice gradual changes, such as a pocket corner becoming thin or a rip extending into a seam.
Store denim folded on a shelf or hung from a sturdy waistband hanger. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heaters and damp corners. Do not pack distressed jeans tightly beneath heavy knitwear, since prolonged pressure can flatten the fabric and force loose threads into a wider tear. If the jeans are worn seasonally, clean and fully dry them before storage.
Refresh colour while preserving the distressed finish
The colour of denim can change through washing, sunlight and contact with other garments. To slow uneven fading, wash dark or saturated denim separately the first few times, especially when the jeans are new. Cold water helps reduce dye release, although some colour transfer may still occur.
Spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth and a little mild detergent rather than putting the whole pair through a cycle. Dab instead of scrubbing, and work from the outside of the mark towards the centre. Scrubbing across a ripped edge can pull at the exposed threads and create a fuzzy, enlarged border.
If odour is the main issue, air the jeans in a shaded, breezy place. A fabric freshening spray should be tested on an inside seam before use, as some formulas can leave marks or alter the finish. Avoid household disinfectants and perfume applied directly to denim unless the product is specifically suitable for clothing.
For shoppers building a wardrobe around versatile denim, the GUESS shop is a useful place to browse current styles and consider how different washes, fits and finishes can work together. A second pair in a similar cut can make it easier to rotate wear without losing the relaxed character of a distressed look.
Know when home care is no longer enough
A little loose thread is usually manageable, but certain signs call for professional attention. Stop wearing the jeans if a rip reaches a seam, the waistband begins to separate or the fabric tears with very little pressure. Continuing to wear them can turn a simple reinforcement into a more extensive alteration.
A tailor can use darning, an internal patch or a discreet line of stitching to stabilise the fabric. Darning is particularly effective where the denim has become thin but has not yet formed a large hole. The repair can match the thread colour or create a deliberate contrast, depending on whether you want the result to blend in or become part of the design.
Take care with dry cleaning. Some distressed finishes and stretch blends can respond poorly to solvents or pressing, so ask the cleaner how they will handle the rips before approving the service. Share any concerns about loose threads, patches or decorative abrasions, and point out areas that should not be pressed aggressively.
If a new pair develops a premature tear, keep your proof of purchase and photographs of the issue. Australian consumer protections can apply when clothing fails to meet acceptable quality or does not match its description, although normal wear, accidental snagging and expected distressing may be treated differently. A clear record helps separate a product fault from damage caused during use.
Caring for ripped denim is a balance between preservation and personality. Cold, gentle washing; careful drying; sensible storage and early reinforcement can keep the original distressing in place while allowing the denim to soften naturally. Give your favourite ripped pair a quick inspection today, trim loose threads instead of pulling them, and set aside a gentle wash when it is genuinely needed. With a little attention, the jeans can keep their relaxed Australian street-style appeal without letting every small fray become a full repair.
