How to care for your leather jacket for years of wear

A well-made leather jacket can become one of the most dependable pieces in a wardrobe. It works over denim for a casual weekend in Melbourne, adds polish to an evening outfit in Sydney, and offers useful protection when the temperature drops after a coastal sunset. With the right routine, the hide develops character without losing its shape, colour or softness.

Leather is a natural material, so it responds to its surroundings. Australian conditions can be particularly varied: bright UV exposure, dry inland heat, sudden showers, salty sea air and humid weather in Brisbane or Darwin all affect how a jacket ages. Care is less about constant maintenance and more about making sensible choices before small marks become permanent damage.

The best approach starts with knowing the finish and following the manufacturer’s instructions. A smooth leather jacket, a suede style and a polyurethane design require different products and handling. For seasonal styling, campaign inspiration and brand updates, the GUESS Journal offers a useful place to keep up with fashion and lifestyle ideas while you build a wardrobe that lasts.

Read the label before reaching for a cleaner

Check the care label, product description and any booklet supplied with the jacket. These details can identify whether you have full-grain, top-grain, corrected-grain, suede, nubuck or faux leather. The surface may look similar across styles, yet a product designed for smooth cowhide can darken suede or leave a waxy film on a synthetic finish.

If the label says professional clean only, take that instruction seriously. Leather can shrink, stiffen or lose its finish when it is washed in a machine or treated with household soap. A specialist leather cleaner understands how to work with dyes, linings and bonded panels. This is especially important for coloured jackets, which may bleed when exposed to moisture.

Before using any conditioner, test it on a hidden section such as the underside of a hem or inside a cuff. Apply a small amount with a clean cloth, wait until it dries and inspect the colour and texture in natural light. The test matters even when the product is marketed as suitable for all leather, because finishes vary between manufacturers.

Build a simple cleaning and conditioning routine

For ordinary dust, use a soft, dry cloth or a clean horsehair brush. Wipe gently rather than rubbing hard, paying attention to the collar, cuffs, pockets and seams where body oils collect. A light clean after several wears prevents grime from becoming embedded in the grain. Empty the pockets first, and remove belts or detachable trims before working on the jacket.

Conditioning helps replace some of the oils that leather gradually loses, but too much product can make it greasy, attract dust or soften the structure excessively. For a frequently worn smooth leather jacket, conditioning once or twice a year is often enough. A jacket worn occasionally may need less. Apply a thin, even layer with a lint-free cloth, leave it to absorb and buff away any residue.

Avoid olive oil, coconut oil, petroleum jelly, alcohol wipes, baby wipes and strong detergents. They may create an instant shine, yet can oxidise, stain, block the pores or damage the protective coating. Household hairdryers and direct heaters create a similar problem by pulling moisture from the hide too quickly.

Jacket material Everyday care Products to avoid Extra attention
Smooth leather Dust with a soft cloth and condition sparingly Household oils, alcohol and heavy waxes Test conditioner first; polish hardware separately
Suede Brush gently with a suede brush and use a suede eraser for light marks Water-heavy cleaners and standard leather conditioner Keep away from rain and store with room to breathe
Nubuck Use a nubuck brush and approved spot treatment Cream polishes and oily conditioners Restore the nap gently without pressing hard
Faux leather or PU Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately Solvents, abrasive sponges and heat Check for peeling at folds and seams
Patent leather Wipe with a soft cloth and store away from touching garments Rough brushes and unapproved sprays Prevent surfaces from sticking together

Deal with rain, spills and Australian sun

If a jacket becomes wet, act calmly. Shake off excess water, blot the surface with a towel and hang it on a broad, padded hanger in a cool, ventilated room. Keep it away from radiators, fireplaces, heated towel rails and direct afternoon sun. Allow it to dry slowly, then condition smooth leather lightly if the surface feels tight or dry.

Never scrunch a wet jacket into a bag or place it in a tumble dryer. Creases formed while damp can become difficult to remove, and concentrated heat may cause cracking or shrinkage. If the lining is soaked, turn the jacket inside out as far as the construction allows and let air circulate around it. Persistent water marks or colour changes are best handled by a professional.

Australia’s sun deserves special consideration. UV exposure can fade black, brown and coloured leather, especially when a jacket is left on a car seat, balcony chair or shopfront-facing hook. Store it in a wardrobe away from windows, and use a breathable garment bag for longer periods. A fabric cover is preferable to sealed plastic, which can trap humidity and encourage mildew.

Sunscreen, body lotion, perfume and hair products can also mark the collar and shoulders. Let skincare and fragrance dry before dressing, and wipe visible residue away quickly. On coastal trips around Perth, the Gold Coast or Sydney’s eastern suburbs, salt and sand should be brushed off rather than ground into the finish. Salt left on the surface can draw out moisture and create pale edges.

Store the jacket so it keeps its shape

A sturdy, wide hanger supports the shoulders and reduces stress on the leather. Thin wire hangers can leave dents, while overfilled wardrobes press sleeves and collars into awkward folds. Give the jacket enough space for air to move around it, particularly during humid weather. Avoid hanging leather near damp walls, laundry areas or strong-smelling cleaning products.

Fasten the main zip or a few buttons before storage so the front retains its shape, but do not overfill the pockets. Remove keys, sunglasses and wallets, which can stretch the leather and create sharp pressure points. If the jacket has a removable hood, belt or thick shearling collar, store accessories in a way that avoids crushing the main body.

For travel, fold the jacket only when necessary. Lay it flat, place tissue or a clean cotton shirt between major folds and unpack it as soon as you arrive. On a long flight or road trip, a padded hanger at your destination is better than leaving the jacket compressed in luggage. Never store it in a plastic dry-cleaning bag for weeks.

Seasonal storage is a good time to inspect the jacket from collar to hem. Look for loose stitching, broken zip teeth, lifting coating, mould spots and dry patches. Small repairs are usually easier and less expensive before a tear spreads. A leather repair specialist can replace a zip, reinforce a seam or recolour a worn panel while preserving the original silhouette.

Match repairs and products to the finish

Smooth leather responds well to a specialist cleaner and conditioner, but the finish still matters. Aniline leather has a more natural, absorbent surface and can mark easily. Pigmented or coated leather is generally more forgiving, though harsh rubbing can remove colour. If you cannot identify the finish, take a photograph of the care label and ask a reputable leather-care professional before treating it.

Suede and nubuck need a different routine. Use a dedicated brush to lift the nap, moving in one direction with light pressure. A suede eraser may reduce a small dry scuff, but water rings, oil stains and heavy soiling often need specialist treatment. Do not apply ordinary leather cream, as it can flatten the texture and permanently change the appearance.

Faux leather, often made with PU or PVC, does not absorb conditioner in the same way as animal hide. Wipe it with a slightly damp cloth, then dry it immediately with a soft towel. Peeling or flaking usually indicates deterioration of the coating rather than simple dryness, so oils will not restore it. Keep synthetic jackets away from high heat, which can accelerate cracking around elbows and folds.

Hardware deserves care as well. Wipe zips, snaps and buckles with a dry cloth, and keep metal polish away from the leather. If a zip catches, do not force it; inspect the teeth for fabric or thread and ask a tailor or repairer to help. Replacing a slider early may save the surrounding leather from tearing.

A considered wardrobe also helps each piece last longer. Rotate your outerwear instead of wearing the same jacket every day, allow perspiration to evaporate before storage and choose a lighter layer underneath when the weather is warm. If you are refreshing a seasonal look, browse the latest GUESS shop styles with the jacket’s existing colours, proportions and care requirements in mind.

A leather jacket should gain personality with wear, not suffer from neglect. Brush away dust, respond quickly to spills, protect it from intense heat and sunlight, and store it on a proper hanger. Use only products suited to the specific finish, and call on a specialist when the damage goes beyond a surface mark.

Make these habits part of your wardrobe routine before the next change of season. With thoughtful care, your favourite leather layer can keep its structure, comfort and distinctive character through many Australian winters, evenings out and everyday adventures.
