"Because some things never go out of style." — Celebrating the GUESS + Marciano Spring '18 Campaign
Behind the scenes of the fall campaign at a desert motel
A long stretch of highway, a sun-faded motel, and the quiet drama of the American Southwest created the setting for GUESS’s latest fall campaign. Far from a traditional studio, the location gave the shoot a sense of movement and nostalgia, pairing seasonal fashion with the atmosphere of a spontaneous road trip.
The desert motel became more than a backdrop. Its weathered signage, open-air walkways, vintage doors, and wide horizon brought texture to every frame. Against that landscape, denim, leather, sharp tailoring, and Western-inspired details took on a confident new character.
The creative direction balanced polished styling with the imperfect beauty of the road. Every image was shaped by the changing light, the rhythm of the location, and the team’s ability to discover unexpected moments between planned shots.
Finding the right desert setting
The location search focused on places with a strong visual identity. A modern property would have felt too clean, while an untouched desert landscape would have offered too little structure. The chosen motel brought both elements together: a recognizable roadside setting surrounded by open space, dry hills, and endless sky.
Its faded exterior supplied a warm, sun-washed palette that complemented the collection. Cream walls, terracotta details, muted turquoise accents, and weathered wood created a natural relationship with fall neutrals. The motel’s architecture also offered multiple visual layers, allowing the team to move from intimate close-ups to expansive full-length portraits without losing continuity.
The location carried a sense of history without requiring heavy production design. Small details did much of the work: a worn pool chair, a glowing vacancy sign, a row of doors opening toward the parking lot, and shadows stretching across the concrete. These elements helped the campaign feel lived-in rather than staged.
Building the visual language
The styling translated classic fall codes into a desert setting. Structured jackets were softened by loose denim, while fitted silhouettes gained contrast from oversized layers and tactile accessories. Leather pieces reflected the rugged landscape, and metallic hardware caught the sunlight with a flash of modern energy.
The color story moved through shades of sand, espresso, black, faded blue, and deep red. Denim played a central role, connecting the campaign to the road-trip mood while keeping the looks unmistakably GUESS. Washed finishes and strong proportions gave familiar wardrobe staples a fresh editorial edge.
Accessories completed the visual narrative. Statement eyewear, pointed boots, belts, and sculptural jewelry added definition to each outfit. Rather than competing with the location, these details sharpened the contrast between polished fashion and the raw character of the desert motel.
Capturing light, motion, and atmosphere
Natural light shaped the schedule. The first call times began before the heat intensified, when the landscape held a cool, pale glow. As the morning progressed, the sun brought stronger contrast to the motel corridors and parking area, creating graphic lines and deeper shadows.
Golden hour delivered the most cinematic frames. The low sun turned the dust in the air into a soft haze and gave leather, denim, and satin a rich surface quality. The team worked quickly during this window, moving between still portraits, walking sequences, and spontaneous interactions with the environment.
Motion kept the campaign from feeling too static. Models crossed the motel courtyard, leaned against vintage cars, stepped through open doors, and moved along the roadside with the ease of travelers between destinations. The photographs suggest a story already in progress, leaving space for the viewer to imagine where the journey began and where it might go next.
From styling rack to final frame
A campaign shoot depends on precision long before the camera starts rolling. The styling team prepared complete looks in advance, then adjusted them according to the location, temperature, wind, and changing light. Garments had to look effortless while remaining consistent from frame to frame.
The beauty direction followed the same principle. Skin remained fresh and luminous, with softly defined features that held up under bright sun and close photography. Hair was shaped to move naturally, allowing the wind to become part of the image rather than a problem to be corrected.
Behind the camera, the crew balanced a detailed shot list with room for discovery. A reflection in a motel window, a sudden shift in cloud cover, or the way a jacket caught the wind could change the plan. Those unplanned details often supplied the campaign’s most memorable visual moments.
| Creative element | Role in the campaign | Effect on the imagery |
|---|---|---|
| Desert motel | Established the roadside setting | Added nostalgia, texture, and narrative |
| Denim and leather | Connected the collection to travel and Western style | Created contrast between rugged and refined |
| Natural sunlight | Replaced a controlled studio setup | Produced warmth, depth, and changing mood |
| Motel signage and architecture | Provided graphic shapes and color accents | Made the setting instantly recognizable |
| Movement between locations | Suggested an unfolding journey | Gave the campaign energy and spontaneity |
| Fall color palette | Grounded the story in the season | Unified the collection with the desert landscape |
The details that made the story feel real
Authenticity came through in the smaller choices. Instead of covering every surface with decorative props, the production team allowed the motel to speak for itself. A suitcase placed near a doorway, sunglasses left on a car dashboard, or a jacket thrown over a chair could imply a moment without explaining it.
The imagery also embraced contrast. A highly polished look appeared against chipped paint. A dramatic pose was framed by an ordinary motel walkway. Fine jewelry caught the light beside rough concrete. These pairings gave the campaign its tension and made each outfit feel connected to a larger lifestyle.
The desert setting offered a quiet sense of freedom, but the story was grounded in recognizable fashion. The clothes remained the focus, supported by an environment that felt aspirational without becoming distant. That balance is central to the GUESS visual identity: confident, expressive, and ready to move.
The creative team also looked beyond the still image. Short behind-the-scenes clips captured wardrobe changes, location transitions, lighting adjustments, and the informal energy between takes. Why the desert motel still resonates
Roadside motels carry a particular cultural memory. They suggest movement, reinvention, and the possibility of taking a different route. Their signs and corridors are familiar, yet every traveler brings a different story to them. That open-ended quality made the location ideal for a fall campaign built around personal style.
The setting also refreshed seasonal dressing. Fall fashion is often associated with city streets, cool sidewalks, and layered urban looks. Placing the collection in a dry, sunlit landscape showed how adaptable those pieces can be. A tailored coat, denim set, or leather layer can belong to a desert road just as naturally as it can to a downtown evening.
That versatility gives the campaign a lasting appeal. The photographs feel specific to one place and one day, but the styling remains easy to imagine in real life. Viewers can take inspiration from the proportions, textures, and combinations without recreating the entire scene.
The shoot also reflects the way fashion campaigns now live across multiple formats. A hero image may appear beside a short video, an event announcement, a social post, or a retail story. Together, these pieces build a fuller experience around the collection and invite customers to engage with the brand in different ways.
Bring the fall mood into everyday style
The desert motel story offers practical ideas for building a seasonal wardrobe with character:
- Pair relaxed denim with a sharply tailored jacket for contrast.
- Use leather accessories to give neutral outfits a stronger finish.
- Mix faded blues, sand tones, black, and deep red for a sun-washed fall palette.
- Choose statement sunglasses or boots to define a simple silhouette.
- Let one distinctive texture, such as suede, denim, or satin, anchor the look.
The strongest outfits from the shoot were grounded in familiar pieces, then elevated through proportion and styling. A classic denim jacket became more directional over a fluid skirt. A fitted top gained impact beneath an oversized blazer. Small changes in layering created new silhouettes without requiring an entirely new wardrobe.
That approach also connects with the broader GUESS community, where personal expression shapes the way collections are worn. Seasonal style can be polished, relaxed, dramatic, or understated, depending on the setting and the individual. The campaign’s desert backdrop simply makes that freedom visible.

The finished images preserve the feeling of a brief escape: warm light, open roads, vintage architecture, and clothes designed to travel. Behind every frame is a carefully coordinated production, yet the result feels spontaneous. That tension gives the fall campaign its character and makes the desert motel more than a location—it becomes part of the collection’s story.
