Behind the Scenes of the Lookbook Photoshoot in a Desert Landscape

The Australian outback has long been a place of cinematic drama and stark beauty, where endless horizons meet rust-red earth and the sky burns gold at dusk. For the latest GUESS lookbook, the creative team traded urban backdrops for something wilder, hauling wardrobe trunks and camera gear deep into the heart of the desert. The result is a visual narrative that blends classic American denim heritage with the raw, sun-bleached character of the Australian interior.

Lookbook shoots are rarely as glamorous as the final frames suggest. Behind every perfectly composed image lies weeks of planning, a small army of stylists, and a production schedule governed as much by weather as by creative vision. This particular project required mapping out sun angles, sourcing accommodation in remote locations, and ensuring that every outfit held up against dust, heat, and shifting light.

The decision to shoot on location rather than in studio came from a desire to capture something authentic. Denim, leather, and soft tailoring behave differently against natural terrain than they do against a flat cyclorama. By choosing the desert as the stage, the team allowed the environment to shape the styling, the poses, and ultimately the mood of the entire collection.

Scouting the Red Earth

Location scouting began weeks before any camera was loaded into a four-wheel-drive. The production team considered several iconic Australian desert regions, weighing accessibility against visual character. Some spots offered logistical ease but lacked the ochre palette the creative director had in mind. Others promised extraordinary backdrops but demanded permits, chartered flights, and hours of corrugated road.

After multiple recce trips, a shortlist of four regions emerged. Each brought its own personality to the shoot, and each would have delivered a different story. The comparison below outlines how the locations stacked up against one another.

Desert Region State or Territory Landscape Character Best Time to Shoot
Red Centre Northern Territory Iconic red dunes, spinifex, ochre plains May to August
Mungo National Park New South Wales Ancient eroded dunes and the Walls of China April to September
The Kimberley Western Australia Rugged gorges, sandstone ranges, billabongs Dry season, May to October
Coober Pedy South Australia Opal-mining townscape, white dunes, broken terrain Spring months, September to November

In the end, a remote stretch of the Red Centre won out, with a secondary day spent near the white dunes of a South Australian opal-mining town for visual variety. The combination gave the lookbook contrast without requiring the crew to relocate basecamp more than once.

Styling for Sand and Sun

Wardrobe for a desert shoot must do more than look good on a model. It has to survive heat, windblown sand, and the occasional stumble over spinifex. The styling team built looks around pieces that could withstand the environment without losing their shape. Heavy denim was pre-washed to soften the fade, and lighter fabrics were chosen for movement scenes so they would catch the wind without clinging.

Colour palettes were deliberately tightened. Earth tones, washed whites, dusty pinks, and sun-faded indigo dominated the racks. Bright pops of marigold and terracotta echoed the landscape itself, while metallics were saved for evening looks, when they could catch the last light of the day without competing with the midday glare.

Accessories were kept functional. Wide-brim hats, vintage-style sunglasses, and soft leather boots anchored each styling. Pieces were photographed both on the model and flat-layed in the sand, capturing the way the elements altered the materials over the course of the shoot and giving the final edit a tactile honesty.

The Crew Behind the Camera

A lookbook of this scale runs on the coordination of a tightly knit crew. The photographer led the visual direction, working alongside a local producer who understood the rhythms of remote-area logistics. A stylist managed the racks, while an assistant tracked every garment with a labelled bag and a clipboard. Hair and makeup artists worked from a shaded pop-up tent, recalibrating looks as the light shifted across the dunes.

Local guides proved invaluable. Aboriginal-owned touring companies in the Northern Territory often partner with production crews, offering cultural context as well as practical knowledge of the terrain. Their insights informed everything from where the team could safely drive to how to read the sky for incoming weather, and they added a layer of stewardship that the brand was keen to honour.

Catering was another silent star. With the nearest town often hours away, the crew relied on a cook who turned out breakfasts before sunrise and hearty dinners under the stars. Long days in the field demand serious fuel, and no one wanted to make the drive to Alice Springs just for a decent coffee after a wrap.

Chasing the Light

Desert light is famously unforgiving. The Australian sun sits high and harsh, casting short shadows and bleaching colour from anything that lingers too long in its glare. For this reason, the shoot was structured around the golden hours, the brief windows just after sunrise and before sunset when the light turns warm and forgiving. Most setups were planned for a 5am call time, with shooting wrapping by 9am before the heat peaked.

Reflectors and diffusion panels became essential tools. The team used a large silver bounce to lift shadows on faces when shooting toward the sun, and a translucent scrim to soften the midday light for close-up beauty frames. Battery-powered LED panels stood in for fill when the sun dipped behind a distant cloud bank, keeping skin tones consistent across changing conditions.

Weather offered its own unpredictability. One afternoon, a brief dust storm rolled across the plain, turning the sky pink and the air thick with grit. Rather than pack up, the photographer pulled out a 50mm lens and shot into the wind. Those unplanned frames ended up being some of the most evocative in the entire lookbook, capturing the desert in one of its more theatrical moods.

Capturing the Final Looks

The actual shoot unfolded in fast, focused bursts. Each look was allotted roughly thirty minutes, with the stylist, model, and photographer moving in quiet sync. A handheld radio kept the wider crew in touch, particularly when a location change was needed mid-light. Walks between setups doubled as wardrobe checks and breathers in the heat, and gave the team a chance to reset.

Movement was encouraged throughout. Static poses felt stiff against the shifting dunes, so the photographer asked the model to walk, sit, and even run between shots. This produced a natural energy that suited both the denim and the softer, drapey pieces. A backup camera operator shadowed the main setup on a long lens, capturing candid moments that later informed the final edit.

By the final light of day, the team had captured well over two thousand frames. Memory cards were backed up twice onto portable drives before anyone called it a wrap, a ritual every outback shoot respects. Data loss in the desert is not a risk anyone wants to take, especially when the closest replacement card sits in a courier depot a thousand kilometres away.

Post-Production and Beyond

Retouching happened back in Sydney, where the colour grader spent several days matching the warmth of the golden-hour files across the whole series. Skin tones were carefully preserved while the saturation of the landscape was gently nudged to enhance, rather than overpower, the wardrobe. The team resisted the temptation to over-process, knowing the raw character of the arid terrain was the real selling point.

Final selects were reviewed in person over two long sessions, with the creative director weighing in via video from Los Angeles. The chosen images were then laid out in sequence, telling a story that moved from wide horizon shots to intimate close-ups. The pacing reflected the rhythm of the shoot itself, slow and meditative at sunrise, sharper and more dynamic as the day wore on.

Once the lookbook went live, the response confirmed the gamble had paid off. Readers responded to the texture of the sand on bare feet, the dust on a pair of white sneakers, and the way a denim jacket caught the wind at 6:42am. These are details that no studio can replicate, and they are exactly what gives the campaign its singular feel.
